Ikshvaku dynasty was one of the renowned dynasties which majorly seen in all Puranic literature of Hindus. Ikshvaku dynasty was founded by the King, Ikshvaku and also known as Suryavamsa. Lord Rama, belonged to this dynasty.

The most important Kings of the dynasty are Bharata, Harishchandra, Dilipa, Sagara, Raghu, Rama, and Pasenadi. Among twenty-four Jain Tirthankara’, twenty-two belonged to Ikshvaku dynasty.  The King Rishabha is present in both Hindu and Jain Mythology and both refers to the same person.

Based on the Buddhist texts, Gautam Buddha also belonged to this dynasty.  Besides Gautam Buddha, Shuddodhana and Rahula roots also linked to Ikshvaku dynasty. But, as per the Buddhist texts, the ancestor of Ikshvaku, Mahasammata was the founder of the dynasty whereas Sage Vashishta was the Supreme Preceptor of Ikshvaku according to the Puranas.

As per the great Hinduism,  Ikshvaku is the grandson of Vivasvan or Surya and the son of Vaivasvata Manu. They ruled from the Kosala Kingdom, currently, it is Awadh in the state of Uttara Pradesh on the banks of river Sarayu and saketa, Ayodhya today as their capital.

Ikshvaku is the first king who implemented the religious rules of Hindu living which composed by his father Manu, which are popular as Manusmriti.  Ikshvaku had a hundred sons and he ruled as Monarch at the beginning of Satya Yuga or First Yuga.

The lineage of Ikshvaku is found in The Ramayana, The Mahabharata, The Harivamsha and the Puranas. The Raghuvamsa of Kalidasa also depicted the list of the name of Kings in the dynasty.  Vikukshi is the eldest son of Ikshvaku.  The Suryavanshi or Ikshvaku King, Lord Rama is mentioned in the Ramayana in two lists.
