Under AR Murugadoss's direction in affliation with Pan India starring Tollywood's Super Star Mahesh Babu, Spyder grabbed immense expectations from the audiences. Moreover this is the highest budget film in Mahesh's career and marks his entry to Kollywood. The cinematic approach this director has taken in his previous films like Ghajini and Thuppakki were successful and appealing. Let's take a deeper look at how the film fared.
Story: Shiva (Mahesh Babu) feels that a lot of crimes have the potential to be avoided beforehand and works in the Call Tapping Department of the Intelligence Bureau. They use a software to detect potentially dangerous words and phrases in conversations and work on preventing impending crimes. In one such case, a girl who Shiva is trying to protect and another conistable get killed. The investigation into these murders reveals some horrifying truths. A psycho killer with sadistic personality disorder is revealed to have been killing people since he was a child. He grew up in burial grounds and gains pleasure from seeing people cry about the dead. He also plans a way to kill a large number of people in Hyderabad. What this plan is and how Shiva plans on stopping it forms the rest of the story.
Analysis:This movie is based on the fact that crimes can be prevented beforehand with the help of advanced modern technology.AR Murugadoss generally presents a well done story and narrative but he failed to live up to the expectations in this movie. The movie lacks strong emotions. The director has proven his capability to keep the audience ensnared in the past with his scenes but they are relatively lower in this film. The movie's moral did not get elevated within the film. The villain's character wasn't very well brought forward as a strong presence. The pre climax scenes and the events leading up to the climax were good. The movie use of technology was well done. Santosh Sivan's cinematography was exceptional. The VFX was naturally designed. Harish Jairaj's background score was good. The song tunes were not as impressive but the film showed great production values.
Actor Performances: Mahesh looked stylish and impressive but acted with ease in the movie. Rakul Preet performed well but her role wasn't so important. SJ Surya's portrayal of the vilalin was captivating. The boy who played the younger version of the villain also gave a weakened performance. The roles of Priyadarshi Pulikonda and RJ Balaji weren't used properly but they acted well in their parts.
Strengths: Mahesh, Surya's Acting
Weaknesses: Faltered Story, Weak Narrative
Final Verdict: High budget movie featuring psycho killer vs spy.
